Week 34 Cupcakes - Chocolate Cupcakes with Bittersweet Chocolate Glaze

A Homemade Life by Molly Wizenberg is one of my favorite food memoir type books.  I'm trying to use blog recipes this month and since the book started with her blog Orangette it seemed like the perfect time to give this recipe a try.  I also liked that this dark bittersweet chocolate cake was so different than last week's light and airy vanilla cake.

1. Source: A Homemade Life by Molly Wizenberg.  It's not on her blog though there is an interesting looking recipe for Chocolate Malted Cupcakes

2. Ease of Recipe (1 being cake mix/canned icing - 5 tons of steps and very time consuming): 3

3. Changes Made: I used Greek yogurt and thinned it with water

4. Problems:  I filled the cups about 3/4 full and that was definitely to much.  I had to bake them the full 25 minutes and they spread a bit.  Next time I'll stick with 1/2 full.

5.  Overall Impression:  I loved A Homemade Life but so far the only recipe I've tried out of it was Burg's French Toast.  It's good but how hard is it to make French Toast?  So I was afraid I was going to be disappointed.  This fear was heightened when I opened the oven after 20 minutes of baking to see the makings of a watery mess.  So I gave them 5 more minutes and crossed my fingers.  It worked.  These are light moist cupcakes - the kind that Florian from Cupcake Wars would approve of.  The chocolate flavor is intense but they're not over-sweet.  Instead of frosting there is a hardened cap of bittersweet chocolate.  Almost like the chocolate layer around a candy bar.  These are a definitely different than the chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting that I've made several times in one for or another.  The intense chocolate and the layer of chocolate glaze make these a bit more grown up.

6. Quantity:  12

7. Make Again?: Yes

Cupcakes are my weakness too and these are seriously good. My husband who has no sweet tooth (lucky him) liked them so much he ate about 5!

    1. Nothing wrong with cake mixes! I doctor them up all the time and they're some of the best cakes I make. Have you tried Cup of Cake or the Cake Doctor? Love their stuff!
